1. The distance light travels in one year is approximately 5,870,000,000,000 miles. Find the distance of light travels in 100 years?

Answer: 587 * ( 10 )12 miles

2. A certain number of taps filled a tank in 7 hours. If there were 4 taps less, the tank would have been filled in 11 hours. Find the number of taps?

Answer: 11

Explanation

Let the number of tabs be x.
The number of taps is inversely proportional to the time taken.
The less the taps, the more the time taken.
Ratio of times taken = 7 : 11
Ratio of number of taps = x : ( x - 4 )
⇒ 7 * x = 11 ( x - 4 )
⇒ 7x = 11x - 44
⇒ 11x - 7x = 44
⇒ 4x = 44
x = ( 44 / 4 )
x = 11
∴ Number of taps = 11

3. The average age of 34 boys in a class is 14 years. If the teacher′s age is included the average age of the boys and the teacher becomes 15 years. What is the teacher′s age?

Answer: 49 years

Explanation:

Let the age of class teacher be P.
( 34 * 14 ) + P = ( 35 * 15 )
476 + P = 525
P = ( 525 - 476 )
P = 49 years

4. If a man walks at the rate of 5 kmph, he misses a train by 7 minutes. However, if he walks at the rate of 6 kmph, he reaches the station 5 minutes before the arrival of the train. Find the distance covered by him to reach the station?

Answer: 6 km

Explanation:

Let the required distance be x km.
Difference in the times taken at two speeds = ( 7 + 5 ) min
= 12 min
= ( 12 / 60 ) hrs
Speed = ( 1 / 5 ) hrs
( x / 5 ) - ( x / 6 ) = ( 1 / 5 )
( 6x - 5x ) / 30 = ( 1 / 5 )
x = 30 / 5
x = 6
∴ Required distance = 6 km
