IIT PATNA OFFERS FREE ONLINE COURSE
Are you interested in learning about edge computing, a technology that enables data to be processed and analyzed near its source, rather than in a distant cloud server? If yes, then you should check out this free online course on edge computing, offered by IIT Patna on the SWAYAM NPTEL platform. This course will teach you the basics of edge computing and how it can be used in scenarios that require low latency and real-time computing. You will also learn how edge computing can overcome some of the challenges of cloud computing.
The course instructor is Dr. Rajiv Misra, a professor of computer science and engineering at IIT Patna. He is an expert in edge computing and has published more than 70 papers and 2 book chapters in reputed journals and conferences. He has an h-index of 10 and more than 590 citations. Some of his publications are in IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE Transaction on Parallel and Distributed Systems, IEEE Systems Journal, Adhoc Networks, Computer Network, Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing, etc.
The course content will cover the following topics:
- What is cloud and what are its limitations for low latency and RTT applications.
- What is edge computing and what are its architectures.
- How edge computing can support user applications.
- What are the distributed systems concepts in edge computing, such as time ordering, clock synchronization, distributed snapshot, etc.
- How machine learning can be applied to edge sensor data for tasks like predictive maintenance, image classification, and self-driving cars.
- How deep learning can be performed on-device at the edge for latency-sensitive applications.

The course is open for anyone who wants to learn about edge computing, but it is especially suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate students of computer science and engineering. The course duration is eight weeks and it will start from 22 January to 16 February 2024. The course also offers two credit points for students who complete it successfully. To enroll in the course, you need to register on the official website before 29 January 2024. This course is free to enroll and learn from, but if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional and costs Rs 1000/-. The exam date is 23 March 2024, and you can choose either the morning session from 9am to 12 noon, or the afternoon session from 2pm to 5pm. The registration link will be announced soon, so stay tuned for that. You will have to fill the online registration form and pay the certification exam fee. More details will be provided when the registration form is published. Please note that there may be some changes in the exam schedule or format, which will be communicated to you in advance.
Please check the form for more details on the cities where the exams will be held, the conditions you agree to when you fill the form, and other important information.
Now, let's talk about the criteria to get a certificate. To get a certificate, you need to score well in both the assignments and the exam. The average assignment score is calculated as 25% of the average of your best 6 assignments out of the total 8 assignments given in the course. The exam score is calculated as 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100. Your final score is the sum of your average assignment score and your exam score.
You will be eligible for a certificate only if your average assignment score is at least 10 out of 25, and your exam score is at least 30 out of 75. If you fail to meet one of these criteria, you will not get the certificate even if your final score is 40 or above out of 100.
